Tuna Poke Bowl
An easy-to-put-together family favourite!

Poké bowls are traditionally a Hawaiian dish that includes raw fish cut (poké means "cut" in Hawaiian) into cubes and usually served on cooked rice. If your household is anything like mine then raw fish is (unfortunately for me!) off the menu. What that opens the door for, however, is a more convenient approach using tinned tuna- we use tuna in springwater but you can experiment with the different mediums and flavours that you can find around!

Tinned Tuna
Tinned tuna has a variety of health benefits, as well as being extremely convenient!

Tinned tuna (like in this tuna poke bowl) is an excellent source of high-quality protein, which is essential for building and repairing tissues, producing enzymes and hormones, and supporting overall bodily functions. A typical serving of tinned tuna can provide a substantial amount of protein, often exceeding 20 grams per can, depending on the brand and specific type of tuna used.

In addition to its protein content, tinned tuna is low in calories and fat, particularly when packed in springwater. This makes it an ideal option for those who are monitoring their caloric intake or trying to lose weight, as it allows for a satisfying and nutritious meal without excessive calorie consumption. The low-fat content is particularly appealing, as it provides a lean source of protein that can easily fit into various dietary plans.

Moreover, tinned tuna is rich in essential omega-3 fatty acids, which are known for their heart health benefits. These healthy fats can help reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and decrease the risk of heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids are also vital for brain health, contributing to cognitive function and potentially reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

Tinned tuna is also a good source of several important vitamins and minerals. It contains significant amounts of vitamin D, which is crucial for bone health and immune function, as well as B vitamins such as niacin and B12, which play a key role in energy metabolism and the maintenance of healthy nerve cells. Additionally, tinned tuna provides important minerals like selenium, which acts as an antioxidant, and phosphorus, which is necessary for healthy bones and teeth.

Tinned tuna is also super convenient- its long shelf life means that it can be stored in the pantry for when it's required (or for throwing together dishes like this one!
